SMCISD: Student Transfer & Pre-Registration Information

San Marcos CISD is at the point of reaching facility capacity at several schools, and because of this, classroom space has become an issue. We know our parents want to select the school best fit for their child; however, we have to ensure the students zoned to a particular school have been accommodated.

In a letter that is posted on the San Marcos CISD web site (www.smcisd.net), Assistant Superintendent for Business & Support Services Karen Griffith said, “We have no option but to limit the number of Student Transfers at our campuses.”

She continues, “Starting with the 2016-2017 school year, space will be limited as to the number of students we will be able to grant transfers. Beginning April 18, 2016, we will accept student transfer requests, and selection will be based on submittal date, length of time at campus, attendance, and discipline. Because of limited space, we have added the option to request a second campus, if the first campus you selected is full.”

According to Griffith, starting April 18, forms will be available at the campuses or online at www.smcisd.net.

The new transfer policy also affects district employees who reside out of the SMCISD boundary zones and want to bring their children with them to work. The new policy allows employees to continue to do so if they are the legal parent or guardian of the child, and only if the transfer pertains to the employee’s assigned campus. An out-of-district employee will be granted a transfer to their assigned campus or to a campus that is not closed due to capacity.

Employees can submit a Student Transfer Request, but those will be processed in the same manner as those of other district parents.

Pre-Registration Information

Pre-registration for elementary school grades 1-5 will be April 18 – May 13, 2016, and Bonham Pre-K enrollment will be June 6-June 16.

For registration or pre-registration, acceptable proof of residency is required and may be one of the following, and if a bill, must be dated within the last 30 days:

  • Current utility bill (water, gas, electric) that shows the address of service and the parent or guardian’s name
  • Current rental or lease agreement
  • Current tax receipt showing home ownership
  • Current mortgage statement showing ownership
  • Current contract on a house, provided the approved loan is signed by both buyer and seller.

The following documents are NOT accepted as proof of residency: cell phone bills, telephone bills, a driver’s license, Medicaid/ Medicare cards, or tax statements.

A parent or legal guardian who lives with family or friends in San Marcos CISD and who does not have the require proof of residency described above, must complete a Residency Verification Form for the 2016-2017 school year. This form is available from the Student Services Office located in the Lamar Building located at 121 E. De Zavala Drive (a new address) in San Marcos. You can call 512-393-6932 for more information on the Residency Verification process.

All parents of transfer students (child is zoned to a different school) should be aware that the required form and proof of residency is due back to your child’s teacher by May 13, 2016. Letters reminding parents of this will go out next week to parents of transfer students.

If your child is going to another campus within the district during the next school year, the transfer packet will forward to the new school.

Griffith adds, “All of our campuses have excellent teachers who give their very best to students. Whichever campus your child attends, the District will work hard to meet their needs and provide a quality education.”
