SMCISD Suspends Distribution Service At Mendez Elementary

Staff Reports

Monday night, San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District announced it will be suspending curbside meals at Mendez Elementary effective immediately.

According to district officials, the decision comes after learning a San Marcos CISD Child Nutrition employee was recently diagnosed with COVID-19.

“The employee most recently distributed curbside meals at Mendez Elementary on Wednesday, June 3, but used personal protective equipment and maintained proper social distancing,” the district said in a letter to SMCISD families. “The employee exhibited no symptoms and received a temperature check during a safety protocol screening prior to shift.”

The district said it has communicated with all SMCISD staff who may have had direct contact with the employees and instructed them to self-quarantine as a precaution.

“We are also asking any parents who picked up food at Mendez Elementary last week to continue to monitor for any flu-like symptoms and call your medical professional if any symptoms arise,” the district said. “We recognize that safety precautions must be taken for our dedicated employees as they work to ensure families have a nutrition option over the summer.”

SMCISD has continued precautionary measures throughout the COVID-19 pandemic including regular sanitization of food service preparation and distribution areas throughout the day and the use of personal protection equipment by all employees as well as social distancing, frequent handwashing and temperature readings for all distribution staff daily.

“We understand that when our food service employees come to work, they put their own health on the line to help our families,” the district said. “For that reason, San Marcos CISD is doing everything in our power to help those who have been affected. Our thoughts are with our employees and their families as well as everyone affected by COVID-19.”

SMCISD did not report when the service will resume.
