SMCISD To Relocate Central Administration Building Due To Air Quality Issues

San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District is in the process of relocating staff from their Central Office Building due to mold.
SMCISD’s Central Office suffered water damage from the recent rains that swept the San Marcos area.
According to a press release from district staff, SMCISD hired a company in July to perform an air quality test on their facility, which uncovered the presence of mold. A second company has confirmed the results.
“We at San Marcos CISD work hard to ensure the safety and welfare of our students and staff,” Andrew Fernandez, Executive Director of Communications at SMCISD, said. “And we strive to keep our community informed of issues that may affect SMCISD.”
For the safety of staff, the Board of Trustees approved the relocation of the Central Office on Monday; the board voted to pay $11,190 per month for a temporary facility and an additional $50,000 for moving expenses.
“As a district, we are following a remediation protocol presented to us by a certified indoor air quality company,” Fernandez said. “San Marcos CISD is in the process of relocating staff from our Central Office building to 631 Mill Street until further analysis & decisions can be made on the building.”
Fernandez said the district wanted to give the San Marcos CISD community full transparency with tax dollars; staff went through a due process to select a temporary facility that would be financially responsible to the district’s constituents.
“San Marcos CISD’s top priority is the welfare and safety of our students and staff,” he said. “As a district, please be assured, we are acting in the best interest of our staff to relocate them to a different location.”
At present, the district has not released information on how long the Central Office will be at the temporary facility, which is located at 631 Mill Street.
