SMHS Recognizes 33 AP Scholars And Three National Hispanic Scholars

The College Board recently recognized 33 San Marcos High School students as Advanced Placement (AP) scholars – including an AP National Scholar—and three students as National Hispanic Scholars, according to Debbie Smith, SMHS Director of the Academy of Applied Sciences.  SMHS students earned four designations of AP scholars. Students who were celebrated include:
AP Scholars – are students who receive a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. The average score for the following SMHS students was 2.99:

  • Cailtlyn Banning — Senior
  • Claudia Calderon — Senior
  • Charicee Cervantez — 2015 Graduate
  • Loren Gamez — 2015 Graduate
  • Levi Jordan — 2015 Graduate
  • Samuel Kirkpatrick — 2015 Graduate
  • Shannon Mathis — 2015 Graduate
  • Jacob McGee — 2015 Graduate
  • Joe Merchant — Senior
  • Sarah Mock — Senior
  • Maximillan Murdoch — Senior

AP Scholars with Honor status are granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. The average SMHS student score in this category was 3.60:

AP Scholars with Distinction honors are granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. The average score for the SMHS students below was 3.88:
  • Chelsea Davis — 2015 Graduate
  • Raven Goad — 2015 Graduate
  • Trinity Rinear — 2015 Graduate
  • Charles Vidrine — 2015 Graduate
AP National Scholar: Trinity Rinear (2015 Graduate) was also named an AP National Scholar. This honor is granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.
San Marcos High School also has three National Hispanic Scholars in 2015-2016, as announced by the College Board. They are seniors Caitlyn Banning, Joe Merchant, and Maximillan Murdoch. Although the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) does not provide monetary awards, being named is an important academic accomplishment, and their information is made available to subscribing four-year postsecondary institutions.
This year, the organization is recognizing 5,000 Hispanic/Latino students from a pool of over 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who took the PSAT/NMSQT exams. These students are U.S. citizens from the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Mariana Islands, the Marshal Islands, and students attending schools abroad. Submitted by SMCISD
