SMHS Student Artists Recognized By The SMCISD Trustees
Out of more than 2100 state-qualifying artworks, 150 were chosen for the Gold Seal show; only 23 of these pieces are 3D works.
On Monday, May 15, 2017, the San Marcos CISD School Board honored several San Marcos High School student artists who had been recognized at the state level.
Teacher Chris Cooper introduced the students and presented them certificates before the students were congratulated by the Trustees.
STATE VASE
Four San Marcos High School Visual Art students qualified for the Texas State Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), held in San Antonio on April 29.
Jourdan Gamez, Isabella de la Iglesia, Isabel Rocha and Olivia Zdeb were all named All-State Artists by earning a top rating at the state level.
VASE competition begins at the regional level, where students write about the art they’ve created, and then are interviewed for 8 minutes by jurors (SMCISD hosts region 13 South VASE).
Jurors evaluate both their interview and art, and then rate the work between 1 and 4, with 4 as the top rating. Jurors then choose 10% of the top-rated art to advance to the state meet, where another panel of jurors apply a higher level of criteria to qualifying artwork and assign a state rating.
Jourdan Gamez and Olivia Zdeb were given additional honors by having their 3-D artworks selected for the prestigious VASE Gold Seal Exhibit.

Also, Jourdan’s sculpture was also selected for a scholarship award based on the merit of her work within the Gold Seal exhibit. Isabel and Isabella have advanced to State VASE two years, while Jourdan and Olivia advanced for the first time.
STATE YOUTH ART MONTH
Two San Marcos High School Visual Art students had artwork selected for the Texas State Youth Art Month Exhibit, which hung at the State Capitol and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum during the month of March into early April.
Art by Margaret Hoover and Natalie Flores were part of this statewide 100-artwork exhibit, which is sponsored by Texas Art Education Association, the Bob Bullock Museum, the State Capitol Preservation Board, and the office of First Lady Cecilia Abbott.
The girls had the privilege of meeting Mrs. Abbott, who draped all of the students with their medals, and posed for a photo with each of them.
Congratulations to these students for their all-state achievements. SMHS art instructors are Chris Cooper, Thom Rogers, Jessica Botello, and Amy Hall.
