Governor Greg Abbott suspended the collection of all state and local hotel occupancy taxes for persons affected by Hurricane Harvey. The tax waiver is for a period beginning August 23, 2017, and ending September 6, 2017.
The tax waiver applies to:
- persons with a home address in one of the counties the Governor declared a disaster area; and
- relief workers dispatched to one of those counties.
Evacuees and relief workers should complete a Form 12-302, Texas Hotel Occupancy Tax Exemption Certificate. To certify they qualify, persons should mark the “Exempt by Other Federal or State Law” box and write “Hurricane Harvey” anywhere on the form.
The Comptroller’s office has information for taxpayers affected by the storm, including how to file for an extension of filing tax returns.
