Texas State Women’s Soccer Falls to Coastal Carolina Sunday Night

SAN MARCOS, Texas – In a rare Sunday night contest, the Texas State women’s soccer team fell to Sun Belt Conference newcomer 1-0 at the Bobcat Soccer Complex after the visitors were awarded a controversial penalty kick early in the first half.

The Bobcats are now 6-6-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference while the Chanticleers improved to 7-4-1 on the season and 4-1-0 in the SBC.

Midway through the 13 minute, a CCU midfielder sent in a long ball into the box from 40 yards out. Heather Martin charged out from her goalkeeping position to try and punch the ball away from danger from CCU’s Amber Adams. Martin did not connect solidly with the punch in midair as she collided with Adams, who never attempted to attack the ball and was knocked to the ground. The ball rebounded quickly past the left post for an apparent CCU corner kick.

However, the referee saw it differently and awarded a penalty kick to the Chanticleers on the normal goalkeeping play seen at the collegiate and professional levels. Daniella Famili followed by knocking home the penalty kick to put the visitors up 1-0.

Both Kassi Hormuth and Lauren Prater had opportunities to score off corner kicks in the first half. Prater got her foot on the ball in the 15 minute but was unable to get enough power on it to beat the keeper. Hormuth followed five minutes later by going up strong for a header but the ball went just over the crossbar.

Hormuth had another strong opportunity to knot the score when she ripped a low shot from just inside the box. CCU’s Becca Austin was able to get a few finger tips on the ball that changed the ball’s trajectory past the left post.

Texas State unleashed 16 shots in the second half with multiple opportunities to tie the game.

Late in the 53rd minute Genesis Turman connected with a short corner kick from Kira Zapalac to flick the ball on net but over the crossbar. Nearly five minutes later Brooke Ramsey juked out two defenders as she did on Friday to net the game-winning goal at UL Lafayette. This time, the ball did not go high enough and was easily caught by the goalkeeper.

Early in the 59th minute, Hormuth beat the defense on a counter-attack and ripped a shot from the top of the box. The ball beat the keeper but hit the left post and bounced back into play. Exactly 30 seconds later Rachel Grout ripped a hard shot that was unfortunately right at the keeper.

With just over 20 minutes to play, Taylor Allen unleashed a power shot from 25 yards out that the keeper knocked down but not out of danger. Maddie Nichols was there for the rebound but Austin reacted quickly enough to get in front of her shot while also taking Nichols out on the play with no foul being called.

Turman had another opportunity on goal in the 80th minute. She outmaneuvered past the defender to get an open look but her shot sailed over the net.

Ramsey had the last shots of the game for Texas State with just over four minutes left on the clock. Her first shot was blocked but the ball came back to her and she ripped another attempt. This one went straight at the goalkeeper.

The Bobcats outshot the Chanticleers 24-13 and held an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Texas State also attempted nine corner kicks while holding the visitors to none.

Pacing the Bobcats with five shots was Hormuth and Grout. Ramsey took three shots while Jamie Brown, Alyssa Phelan, Nichols, Prater and Turman all attempted two shots. In goal, Martin made five saves during the run of play.

Texas State is back in action on Sunday, October 9 at 12 p.m. against Arkansas State at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
