Texas State’s Coryell Awarded Fulbright Scholar Appointment To Italy

SAN MARCOS – Joellen Coryell, an associate professor in the Department of Counseling, Leadership, Adult Education and School Psychology at Texas State University, has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar program grant to work with the Libera Università Maria SS. Assunta (LUMSA) in Rome, Italy.
Coryell will both teach and conduct research about adult and higher education in Italy. In particular, her research will focus on the needs created by the internationalization of higher education.
“I feel like I have worked my entire adult life to reach this moment,” Coryell said. “It is an incredible honor to represent my discipline, Texas State University and the U.S. as a Fulbright Scholar.”
The Fulbright program is administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars and is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government.
It is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Coryell is one of over 1,100 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad for the 2018-19 academic year through the program.
While in Rome, Coryell will conduct faculty development seminars on teaching and internationalization, as well as teach an interdisciplinary class to undergraduates and master’s students on international cross-cultural learning, development and engagement. This stay in Italy marks a return for Coryell, who studied there as an undergraduate.
“Not only will I be able to continue my work in this incredible historical and culturally vibrant city, but this award is genuinely exciting for me,” Coryell said. “I have wanted to immerse myself again in Italian education, language and life, as I had as a young woman studying in Florence at 21.”
