UPDATE: After Early Morning Bomb Threat, Walmart Reopens
The Austin Police Department’s bomb squad found no explosives in a backpack a man said contained a bomb during an early-morning bomb threat at the Walmart in San Marcos.
Officers were called to the store about 5:20 a.m. after a naked man, identified as John Charles Wilsford (DOB 12/30/1984) was discovered unconscious in the store’s restroom.
When officers arrived, Wilsford was outside the store fully clothed and indicated he had a bomb in his backpack. The backpack was located just outside the front of the store.
Wilsford was taken into custody, and approximately 100 people were evacuated from the store around 5:30 a.m. His is charged with possession of a hoax bomb, a Class A misdemeanor.
San Marcos police worked closely with the Austin Police Department’s bomb squad during the incident. Once the bomb squad determined that the backpack contained no explosives, employees and customers were allowed to return to the store at 9:45 a.m.
