Update: Man Killed In Wrong-Way Driver Accident On Highway 71

Austin, Texas — Highway 71 eastbound lanes were closed this morning after a fatal accident east of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

The accident involved two vehicles near Navarro Creek Road; authorities reported that a Nissan Maxima was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when it struck a Ford F-250 around 3:15 a.m. The driver of the Ford and a female passenger were taken to South Austin Medical Center.

The driver of the Nissan was killed.

The Department of Public Safety said they are considering whether fog may have been a factor in the collision. Officials remind drivers to reduce distractions as you drive, especially when visibility is low.

Sgt. Robbie Barrera, Texas Highway Patrol, said drivers should be aware of approaching headlights a far ahead as possible and take evasive maneuvers.

The accident caused the eastbound lanes of Highway 71 east of State Highway 130 to be closed for several hours.

The lanes are now reopened. No identities have been released at this time.
