Texas State Men’s Cross Country Claims Third at SBC Championships

TROY, Ala. – Saturday morning on the campus of Troy University, the Texas State men’s cross country team claimed third at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, the best finish in program history since joining the conference. Leading the way was Jose Angel Gonzalez, Joseph Meade and Joseph Pena with top 10 finishes to earn All-SBC Second Team honors.

“Of course we wanted more but for both programs its progress,” said Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Jody Stewart.

Meade paced the Bobcats with an eighth-place finish with a time of 25:06.8. Crossing the finish line next, almost a second behind Meade, was Gonzalez to come in ninth. Meade rounded out the top 10 trio with a 10-place finish as he crossed the line in 25:09.8.

With his eighth-place finish, Meade became the highest finishing Texas State runner at the conference meet in school history. Gonzalez is the first Bobcat to place in the top 10 in multiple seasons after finishing 10th at last year’s SBC meet.

Scoring points as well for Texas State were Noe Belmares, Jr. and Logan Pittdman to give the team 88 at the meet. The point total earned by the top five runners was the lowest ever recorded by the Bobcats since joining the SBC.

The women’s team ended up in eighth, tying the best finish in school history since becoming a member of the Sun Belt Conference. Leading the way for the second straight year was Devina Schneider with an 18th-place finish in a time of 19:12.9. Both freshmen Madilyn King and Kendra Long recorded top 35 finishes.

Overall, the women had the fourth lowest time spread among the teams at 1:34.4. That is an entire minute off the squad’s 2015 time spread.

Next up for the Bobcats is the NCAA South Central Regional taking place Friday, November 11 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
