Longhorns Even Season Series With Bobcats

“We lost a little momentum in the first inning. We came out and had three-straight hits and had some good things going for us, but then we had an aggressive base-running mistake,” Texas State Coach Ty Harrington said.

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas State baseball team dropped a 9-2 contest to Texas Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Bobcats fell to 20-14 on the season, while the Longhorns improved to 23-13.

Both teams loaded the bases in the first, but it was the Longhorns who took advantage with a four-spot to open the game. They added a solo marker in the third and a two-run homer in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead. TXST plated two in the fourth for its lone runs of the game.

A final two tallies from UT in the bottom of the eighth would complete the scoring.

Both teams finished with eight hits, and sophomore Jaylen Hubbard led the Bobcats with a 2-for-3 effort. He also drove in a run and scored once.

Junior Cam Baird (1-3) started on the mound and lasted 2.2 innings. He conceded five runs on four hits, while walking six and striking out one. Sophomore Anthony Pagano logged the next 2.1 frames and gave up two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out two. Four other Bobcat pitchers threw in the contest.

Travis Jones and Ryan Reynolds had two hits each for Texas, with Jones scoring twice and Reynolds driving in two runs. Michael McCann scored twice and Patrick Mathis tallied two RBIs.

Nick Kennedy started for the Longhorns and left after allowing two runs on six hits in 3.2 innings. He struck out five and walked one. Chase Shugart (2-2) was credited with the win after throwing the next three pitches and conceding one hit. Connor Myers and Tyler Schimpf each logged 2.0 innings of work, and Blair Henley threw the ninth.

The victory for Texas evened the season series and halted the Bobcats’ two-game win streak over the Longhorns. The series finale will be contested at 6:30 p.m. April 18 in Austin.

Texas State will now return home for a three-game conference series against ULM. The Bobcats and Warhawks will meet April 13-15 at Bobcat Ballpark.

TEXAS STATE COACH TY HARRINGTON

Opening Statement…

“We lost a little momentum in the first inning. We came out and had three-straight hits and had some good things going for us, but then we had an aggressive base-running mistake. We like to err on the aggressive side, but that flipped our offensive side in the beginning. Obviously, we have to rebound out of this and do some better things, but there were some bright spots in there as well on the mound. Broc Bosse was good tonight. Zachary Leigh was OK. We have to continue to challenge ourselves to keep getting better out there. We had some good at-bats and had a couple of good pitching efforts. Now we have a quick turnaround with a conference game on Thursday. This is an early week for us with Easter on Sunday. Our focus is to get to the practice field tomorrow. We’ve lost three games in a row, and this team hasn’t done that this season. We need to get back after it in practice and get ready for Thursday.”
