Texas State Men’s Basketball Opens Home Slate Against the Islanders

SAN MARCOS, Texas – After opening the season by claiming the 52 Annual Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic, the Texas State men’s basketball team opens its home schedule in Strahan Coliseum Monday night against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.

 

The Bobcats enter the game with a 2-1 record while the Islanders are 2-0 on the young season.

 

Senior Kavin Gilder-Tilbury leads Texas State with 20.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. The Most Outstanding Player of the Rainbow Classic, has made 21-of-37 (58.8%) of his shot attempts and is 9-for-18 on three-point shots. He has also dished out five assists, been credited with four steals and blocked two shots.

 

Nijal Pearson has made an immediate impact on the court. The freshman is averaging 18.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game. His 61.8 field goal percentage (21-for-34) is the highest on the team and he has made a team-high 10 free throws.

 

Bobby Conley has recorded two straight of scoring 10 points. For the season, he is averaging 7.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg and 3.3 apg. The senior enters with a Sun Belt Conference leading 5.0 assist-to-turnover ratio.

 

Heading into the game dishing out 4.0 assists per contest is Ojai Black. He is scoring 4.0 ppg and grabbing 2.7 rpg.

 

Coming off the bench, Immanuel King is putting up 6.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

 

TAMUCC has victories over Our Lady of the Lake (115-100) and UT Rio Grande Valley (94-72). The Islanders were picked to finish third in the Southland Conference by both the Coaches and Sports Information Directors.

 

Leading the team at 21.0 ppg is Joseph Kilgore after scoring 31 points against the Vaqueros. He is also averaging 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks per game.

 

Other players coming into the game with a double-digit scoring average are Ehab Amin (13.5), Jake Kocher (17.5) and Rashawn Thomas (16.5). Kocher paces the team with a 76.5 shooting percentage and 87.5 free throw percentage.

 

Thomas, a First Team All-Southland Conference honoree last season, leads TAMUCC in rebounding (11.5), assists (4.5) and blocks (2.0).

 

Although early in the season, the Islanders are third in the nation in scoring at 104.5 points per game.
