Texas State Women’s Soccer Faces Ragin’ Cajuns on the Road, Host Chanticleers

 

SAN MARCOS, Texas – This weekend marks the halfway point of the Sun Belt Conference schedule for the Texas State women’s soccer team. The Bobcats conclude three consecutive road game on Friday against UL Lafayette at Ragin’ Cajuns Soccer Facility at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Texas State returns to the Bobcat Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. to host the newest conference member Coastal Carolina.

Heading into the weekend, the Bobcats are 5-5-2 on the season and are tied for third in the league standings with a 2-1-1 record. The Ragin’ Cajuns are 6-5-1 overall and are also 2-1-1 in the SBC while the Chanticleers have a 5-4-1 record and 2-1-1 in the conference.

Last Time Out

Texas State went 0-1-1 last weekend in road games at Appalachian State and Georgia Southern. The Bobcats played the Mountaineers to a 1-1 draw and fell 1-0 to the Eagles on a penalty kick.

Junior forward Kassi Hormuth knocked in the lone goal for Texas State after give-and-go action with Lauren Prater three minutes into the second half in the mountains of North Carolina. Hormuth has helped account for four of the five goals scored by the Bobcats in SBC action with two goals and assists.

In goal for Texas State in both matches was freshman Heather Martin. She ended last week with 11 saves and an .846 save percentage. The Midlothian, Texas native tied her career-high with seven saves against ASU.

On the program’s career minutes played list (since 2007), Maddie Nichols moved into eight place having played 5,322 minutes on the field for the Bobcats. Senior Ali Jones is two minutes shy of reaching 5,000 career minutes.

With her assist last Friday night, Prater is now tied with Tori hale (2012-14) for ninth on the Texas State career points list.

Scouting UL Lafayette

UL Lafayette went on the road last weekend and came away with victories over Georgia Southern (2-0) and Troy (3-2). When playing at home this season the Ragin’ Cajuns are 4-2-1 with non-conference wins against Alcorn State, Lamar, McNeese State and Southeastern Louisiana.

One of the most prolific scoring teams in the nation this year, ULL is 12th in the nation in goals (28) and 20th in assists (24). Leading the team, the Sun Belt Conference and ranking 14th in the country is Mackenzie Higgins with eight goals. Yazmin Montoya, the reigning SBC Offensive Player of the Week, has four goals and three assists this year. Also scoring multiple times this season has been Haley Boroch (2), Carly Ellender (2), Natalie Newman (2), Annika Schmidt (3) and Whitney Taggart (3).

Ashleigh Cade enters the weekend with eight assists, the third most in all of Division I. Montoya has three assists so far this season and both Erika Sierra and Ellender have been credited with two assists apiece.

In goal, Cosette Morche has started eight of the last nine games. She has surrendered 10 goals for a 1.20 GAA while making 41 saves with a .804 save percentage. Mackenzie Lee started four of ULL’s first five contests to sport a 2.00 GAA with 15 saves and a .682 save percentage.

Texas State leads the all-time series against the Ragin’ Cajuns 3-1. When meeting in SBC action, the Bobcats have a 2-1 record. The last two meetings have gone in Texas State’s favor; a 4-2 victory last season on the road and a 2-1 victory at home in 2014. ULL’s lone win was on Oct. 18, 2013 in Lafayette by the score of 5-2.

Scouting Coastal Carolina

Coastal Carolina sits in fifth place in the SBC standings, a point back of both the Bobcats and Ragin’ Cajuns, after falling to Georgia State by the score of 2-0 on the road last weekend. The Chanticleers opened conference play with wins at home over Arkansas State and Appalachian State. Prior to Sunday’s game in San Marcos, CCU faces Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Georgia on Friday night.

Pacing the Chanticleers with three goals each is Amber Adams and Daniella Famili. Adams is first on the team with eight points and Famili is second with seven points. Both Alexis Magruder and Alexis Siegel have scored twice this season. Setting teammates up with a team-high three assists is Ambria Shutts.

Becca Austin has started seven games in between the posts. She comes into the weekend with a 1.13 GAA while stopping 35 shots. Making four appearances in goal has been Morgan Divine. She has a 0.63 GAA, six saves and a .750 save percentage.

Sunday will be the first meeting between Texas State and Coastal Carolina. It will also be just the second for the Bobcats against a program from the Palmetto State.
