Five Bobcats Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and must have finished the indoor track and field season ranked in the top 96 in an individual event, the top 48 in a relay event or have participated in any round, championship or preliminary, of the NCAA Division I Championships in the outdoor season.

NEW ORLEANSFive Texas State track and field athletes earned All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2016-17 season. Receiving the award were T’Mond Johnson, Julie Lange, Dexter Lee, Michael Madu and Cody Schulz.

It is the third consecutive year that Lange has been recognized and second straight for both Lee and Schulz.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and must have finished the indoor track and field season ranked in the top 96 in an individual event, the top 48 in a relay event or have participated in any round, championship or preliminary, of the NCAA Division I Championships in the outdoor season.

Johnson qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the shot put, where he earned All-American Honorable Mention honors after a 21st place finish. He won the gold at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships with a near school record toss of 19.03m (62-5.25). The Killeen, Texas native also claimed the SBC indoor title in the shot put with distance of 18.23m (59-9.75), the third longest in school history in the indoor season. Johnson a Health and Fitness Management major with a 3.26 GPA.

Lange claimed two silvers and a bronze at the SBC Outdoor Championships in helping the women win their first Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships. The senior would later compete at the NCAA West Preliminary meet in the discus, hammer throw and shot put. This season she set the school record in the discus (54.11m; 177-6), hammer throw (60.19m; 197-6) and weight throw (19.74m; 64-9.25).

The Castroville, Texas native graduated in the spring with a degree in communication disorders and a 3.86 GPA. She was also named the Texas State Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, is a four-time Oak Farms “Cream of the Crop” winner, named to the Dean’s List seven times and named to the SBC All-Academic Team three times.

Lee competed in his second straight NCAA West Preliminary meet in May, competing in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. The senior ran the third leg of the 4x100m relay in Austin that broke the school record with a time of 39.76. In his two years with the Bobcats, he helped the 4x400m relay win the gold at all four SBC Championship meets.

At this past conference outdoor championship meet, Lee was a part of the 4x100m relay that ran a 40.05, the third fastest in school history, to claim the gold by two hundredths of a second. In the classroom, he has posted a 3.62 GPA while majoring in business management. The Allen, Texas native was also a recipient of the Texas State Cream of the Crop honor this past spring.

Madu qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary meet in the triple jump. His best leap of the season came at the Bobby Lane Invitational when he jumped a career best 15.15m (49-8.5). The sophomore was a 2016-17 Texas State Academic Achievement recipient and has posted a GPA of 3.51 while majoring in economics.

Schulz ran the first leg of the men’s 4x100m relay that ran a school record time of 39.76 at the NCAA West Preliminary meet. The senior recorded a career best leap in the long jump at the Bobcat Classic at 7.56m (24-9.75). During the indoor season, he claimed the bronze in the 60m dash at the SBC Championships. The Marble Falls, Texas native graduated in the spring with a degree in criminal justice and a 3.61 GPA.
